RESUMO

Zinc is one of the essential microelements for the metabolism of animals. Zinc nanoparticles may have higher bioavailability due to their low specific surface area, facilitating absorption by fish. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementation with different zinc-based products on the growth and health of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. Zinc, in different sizes (nanoparticles or bulk) and forms (inorganic or organic), were used as a supplement in the tilapia diet at a dose of 15 mg kg feed-1 for 60 days. At the end of the feeding trial, production performance, hemato-immunological parameters, activity of antioxidant system enzymes, exposure to Streptococcus agalactiae and zinc concentration in the muscle were examined. After the bacterial challenge, the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) significantly increased in the fish treated with organic zinc, inorganic nano zinc, and organic nano zinc, while in the control group (inorganic zinc), MCHC remained unchanged. Regarding defense cells, dietary inorganic nano zinc increased the number of basophils (1.50 ±â€¯1.10) compared to organic zinc (0.80 ±â€¯0.90). Lymphocyte count increased after the challenge only in the organic zinc treatments (bulk and nanoparticles). Neutrophils decreased in the control (inorganic zinc) (2.20 ±â€¯1.70) and inorganic nano zinc (2.60 ±â€¯2.70) treatments after the challenge. When compared before and after the bacterial challenge, the plasma antimicrobial titer significantly increased after the bacterial challenge in all treatments. No significant differences were observed for total proteins, enzymes (SOD and CAT), cumulative survival and zinc deposition on fillet. In conclusion, organic zinc in nanoparticles or bulk size increased Nile tilapia innate defense during bacterial infection. However, the other parameters evaluated were not affected by zinc particle size or form (organic or inorganic), indicating that further evaluations should be conducted with organic zinc in nanoparticles or bulk size in the tilapia diet.

This study investigated the efficacy of sodium chloride (SC) and trichlorfon (T) against Dawestrema cycloancistrium and its physiological effects on Arapaima gigas. The efficacy of chlorine (C) as a prophylactic disinfectant was also evaluated. In vitro test with 15 treatments were: SC 4, 8, 10, 12, 14 g/L, T0.1, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.2 mg/L, and C500, 1000, 3000, 6000 mg/L. Scanning electron microscopy was performed to evaluate parasite damage. The in vivo test was as follows: control, 4 h short baths, once a day, for four consecutive days (SC12 g/L, T5 mg/L); 24 h long baths, for 2 days in 24 h intervals (SC10 g/L, T5 mg/L). In vitro exposure to SC12 and 14 g/L caused 100% mortality of monogeneans at 45 and 60 min, while at T3.2 and 1.6 mg/L 100% of monogeneans died at 30 and 60 min, respectively. In vitro exposure to C resulted in complete mortality after 2-5 min exposure. The SC and T LD50-96 h were 9.9 g/L and 9.73 mg/L, respectively. All in vivo treatments presented efficacy above or close to 90%, with low survival in the long baths. C, starting at 500 mg/L for 5 min, can be used as a disinfectant. Short baths with SC12 g/L and T5 mg/L are recommended for D. cycloancistrium infestations in Arapaima.

Abstract This study investigated the effects of diets supplemented with levamisole on monogeneans on the gills of Colossoma macropomum. Fish were fed with diets containing levamisole at concentrations of 0, 300, 600, 900 and 1200 mg kg-1 for 24, 96 and 240 h and the infection by Anacanthorus spatulatus, Notozothecium janauachensis and Mymarothecium boegeri were evaluated. None of the levamisole concentrations caused either mortality or behavioral alterations in fishes during 240 h of feeding. After 24 h of feeding with 1200 mg kg-1 of levamisole, the abundance of N. janauachensis decreased in comparison with treatments of 0, 300, 600 and 900 mg kg-1, as did the abundance of M. boegeri after 240 h of feeding with 1200 mg kg-1 of levamisole. The efficacy of 900 mg kg-1 of levamisole was only 55.7% after 96 h of feeding, but it was 84.6% after 240 h of feeding with 1200 mg kg-1. Our results show that 1200 mg kg-1 of levamisole for 10 days has good anthelmintic efficacy against monogeneans of C. macropomum. Since monogeneans elicit some of the worst problems in C. macropomum, this study has provided evidence of an effective control method that may be used in fish farms.


Resumo Este estudo investigou os efeitos de dietas suplementadas com levamisol na infecção por monogeneas nas brânquias de Colossoma macropomum. Os peixes foram alimentados com dietas contendo 0, 300, 600, 900 e 1200 mg kg-1 de levamisol por 24, 96 e 240 h e os níveis de infecção por Anacanthorus spatulatus, Notozothecium janauachensis e Mymarothecium boegeri, foram avaliados. Nenhuma das concentrações de levamisol causou mortalidade ou alterações comportamentais nos peixes durante 240 h de alimentação. Após 24 h de alimentação com 1.200 mg kg-1 de levamisol, a abundância de N. janauachensis diminuiu quando comparada aos tratamentos com 0, 300, 600 e 900 mg kg-1, bem como a abundância de M. boegeri após 240 h de alimentação com 1200 mg kg-1 de levamisol. A eficácia de 900 mg kg-1 de levamisol foi somente de 55,7% após 96 h de alimentação, mas foi de 84,6% após 240 h de alimentação com 1200 mg kg-1. Os resultados mostram que 1200 mg kg-1 de levamisol durante 10 dias, tem uma boa eficácia antihelmíntica contra monogeneas de C. macropomum. Como monogeneas provocam alguns dos piores problemas em C. macropomum, este estudo forneceu evidências de um método de controle eficaz que pode ser usado em pisciculturas.

INTRODUCTION: Herbal therapy is a potentially beneficial alternative for fish aquaculture, since it may be cheaper and more effective than chemotherapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro efficacy of Ficus insipida latex on monogeneans of Colossoma macropomum gills. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To evaluate the anthelmintic activity, four concentrations of F. insipida latex (250, 500, 750 and 1000 µL/L) and exposure time to cause immobilization on monogeneans were used. In addition, two control groups, being one with water from the breeding tank and the other with breeding water from the tank + 70% ethyl alcohol were used. RESULTS: At the concentration of 250 µL/L of F. insipida latex, the immobilization of the monogeneans occurred after 4 h of exposure, while at the concentration of 500 µL/L, it occurred after 2 h. At the concentrations of 750 and 1000 µL/L of F. insipida latex, the immobilization of the monogeneans occurred after 1 h and 30 min, respectively. After exposure to 250 µL/L of F. insipida latex, 100% of immobilization of monogeneans was observed within 4 h, to 500 and 750 µL/L, 100% immobilization occurred within 4 h and to 1000 µL/L, 100% mortality occurred after 2 h. CONCLUSIONS: Thus, we recommended the use of 1000 µL/L of F. insipida latex for therapeutic baths in of C. macropomum against monogeneans, after previous test of toxicity.

This study evaluated the efficacy of albendazole, ivermectin, levamisole, mebendazole and praziquantel on monogeneans of Colossoma macropomum, based on in vitro and in vivo assays. In vitro assays indicated that albendazole (500, 100, 1,500 and 2,000 mg/L), ivermectin (200, 250, 300 and 350 mg/L) and levamisole (50, 75, 100 and 125 mg/L) were 100% effective against Anacanthorus spatulatus, Notozothecium janauachensis, Mymarothecium boegeri and Linguadactyloides brinkmanni, while mebendazole (125, 150, 175 and 200 mg/L) and praziquantel (5, 10, 15 and 20 mg/L) were ineffective. Fish mortality in 24 hr therapeutic baths with 500 mg/L of albendazole was 6.6%, but the behaviour of the animals remained unchanged, while 200 mg/L of ivermectin caused lethargy, signs of hypoxia and 100% mortality within 2 hr, and 125 mg/L of levamisole caused no mortality. The efficacy of 500 mg/L of albendazole was 48.6% in the 24 hr baths, while that of 125 mg/L levamisole was 88.2%. Although ivermectin showed in vitro efficacy, the lowest concentration used in baths was highly toxic to fish. Therefore, we recommend the use of 125 mg/L of levamisole to control and treat monogenean infestations on C. macropomum in fish farming.

This study investigated the diversity of metazoan parasites in Colossoma macropomum from the Jari River, in the eastern Amazon, northern Brazil. We collected a total of 4966 parasites from 34 fishes, including monogeneans (Anacanthorus spathulatus, Mymarothecium boegeri, Notozothecium janauachensis and Linguadactyloides brinkmanni), nematodes (Spectatus spectatus larvae, Contracaecum sp. larvae and Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus), digeneans (Cladorchiidae metacercariae), acanthocephalans (Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae), crustaceans (Ergasilus turucuyus, Argulus multicolor, Perulernaea gamitanae and Braga patagonica), mites and leeches. The dominance was of monogenean species, found in the gills of the hosts. The parasites exhibited high aggregate dispersion, except Contracaecum sp. and P. (S.) inopinatus, that showed uniform and random dispersion, respectively. The species richness of parasites varied from 1 to 9, the Brillouin diversity index from 0 to 1.52, evenness from 0 to 0.63 and the Berger-Parker dominance index from 0.39 to 1.00. Abundance of parasites was not influenced by host length, but there was significant correlation with host body weight in some cases. The parasite community was characterized by low species richness and moderate diversity, with a predominance of ectoparasites with high prevalence and abundance, as well as the presence of endoparasites in the larval stage.


Este estudo investigou a diversidade de parasitos metazoários em Colossoma macropomum do Rio Jari, na Amazônia oriental, norte do Brasil. Foram coletados um total de 4.966 parasitos, incluindo monogeneas (Anacanthorus spathulatus, Mymarothecium boegeri, Notozothecium janauachensis e Linguadactyloides brinkmanni), nematoides (larvas de Spectatus spectatus, larvas de Contracaecum sp. e Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus), digeneas (metacercárias de Cladorchiidae), acantocéfalos (Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae), crustáceos (Ergasilus turucuyus, Argulus multicolor, Perulernaea gamitanae e Braga patagonica), ácaros e sanguessugas. A dominância foi de espécies de monogeneas, encontradas nas brânquias dos hospedeiros, e houve elevada dispersão agregada dos parasitos, exceto Contracaecum sp., que teve dispersão uniforme e P. (S.) inopinatus, que mostrou dispersão randômica. A riqueza de espécies de parasitos variou de 1 a 9, o índice de diversidade de Brillouin de 0 a 1,52, a uniformidade de 0 a 0,63 e o índice de dominância de Berger-Parker de 0,39 a 1,00. A abundância de parasitos não foi influenciada pelo comprimento dos hospedeiros, mas houve significativa correlação com o peso corporal em alguns casos. A comunidade parasitária foi caracterizada por baixa riqueza de espécies e moderada diversidade, com predominância de ectoparasitos com elevada prevalência e abundância, bem como pela presença de endoparasitos em estágio larval.

We provide the first study on the diversity and community of parasites in Astronotus crassipinnis from the lower Amazon River, in Brazil. Of 35 hosts examined, 100% were infected with one or more species of parasites, such as Gussevia asota, Gussevia astronoti, Gussevia rogersi, Posthodiplostomum sp., Contracaecum sp., Gorytocephalus sp. and Dolops longicauda. Gussevia asota, G. astronoti and G. rogersi were dominant, and, in total, 9788 parasites were collected. The richness of parasite species (4.9±0.7), Brillouin diversity (0.46±0.28) and evenness (0.29±0.17) were low. Parasites had aggregated dispersion, parasitism did not affect the host condition factor, and host size did not influence abundance, species richness and parasite diversity. The parasitic fauna was characterized by the presence of few species of parasites with high prevalence and low abundance, specifically the endoparasites, besides dominance of ectoparasites. The presence of endoparasites indicates that the diet of A. crassipinnis consists mostly of mollusks and microcrustaceans. This fish species is an intermediate host for Posthodiplostomum sp., Contracaecum sp. and Gorytocephalus sp., parasites found in larval stage. Finally, the behavior and availability of infective stages, which are intermediate hosts for endoparasites, were factors structuring the communities of endoparasites.

The aim of this study was to investigate the parasites fauna of Ancistrus leucostictus, Hypostomus ventromaculatus, Ancistrus sp. and Hemiancistrus sp. from the Igarapé Fortaleza River (Amapá State, Brazil), besides making a checklist of the parasite species in Loricariidae from Brazil. A total of 53 fishes were collected from November 2013 to August 2014. In the hosts, a total of 1,559 parasites of seven taxa were collected: Unilatus unilatus, Trinigyrus mourei, undetermined metacercariae, Genarchella gernachella, Raphidascaris (Sprentascaris) sp., Gorythocephalus elongorchis and Proteocephalus sp. Ectoparasite species were frequent in the examined Loricariidae species, which also had larval stages of endoparasites. The hosts with the highest sampled number, H. ventromaculatus and Ancistrus sp., had the highest parasite species richness. Loricariidae species from Brazil are parasitized by species of Protozoa, Monogenea, Nematoda, Digenea, Acantocephala, Cestoda, Crustacea and Hirudinea, but monogeneans, digeneans and nematodes were the predominant taxa.


O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a fauna parasitária de Ancistrus leucostictus, Hypostomus ventromaculatus, Ancistrus sp. e Hemiancistrus sp. da bacia Igarapé Fortaleza (Estado do Amapá, Brasil), além de fazer um checklist das espécies de parasitos em Loricariidae do Brasil. Foram coletados 53 peixes de novembro de 2013 a agosto de 2014. Nos hospedeiros foram coletados um total de 1.559 parasitos distribuídos em sete táxons: Unilatus unilatus, Trinigyrus mourei, metacercárias não identificadas, Genarchella gernachella, Raphidascaris (Sprentascaris) sp., Gorythocephalus elongorchis e Proteocephalus sp. Espécies de ectoparasitos foram frequentes nas espécies de Loricariidae examinadas, que também apresentaram estágios larvais de endoparasitos. Hospedeiros com maior número amostral, H. ventromaculatus e Ancistrus sp., apresentaram maior riqueza de espécies de parasitos. Espécies de Loricariidae do Brasil são parasitados por espécies de Protozoa, Monogenea, Nematoda, Digenea, Acantocephala, Cestoda, Crustacea e Hirudinea, mas monogeneas, digeneas e nematoides são os táxons predominantes.
